The power
Modernity gives us the power to dominate the nature. but what is power?
The power is not the control, but the capacity. I can live, die, speak, ... all these are capabilities of existence. That is the real power, and not the illusion that give us the technical tools

In Tools for Conviviality, Ivan Illich says that we became disempowered because all the technological progress has got us in a point where we don't know how the things provided to us work and as a result we can be easily manipulated by those providers. Also, we are no longer in direct contact with what makes for our everyday lives. It's the corporations who get the most benefits from controlling nature.

You are right.
Humanity thinks she dominate her environment because of her technological dominance of the nature. But the result is, on the contrary, that we become the slaves of the tools which would have allowed us to control our environment.
For exemple, with the automobile industry, we are enslaved by the need of oil energy
